Policies and Expectations
"The things you learn from sports - setting goals, being part of a team, and confidence - that's invaluable. It's not about trophies and ribbons. It's about being on time for practice and accepting challenges." - Summer Sanders
General:
- Younger swimmers must be able to swim at least 25 yrds (one length of the pool) unassisted to remain on the team past the trial time period - coaches reserve the right to recommend swimmer not entered in a meet if they cannot complete a 25m race in less than one minute or a 50m race in a reasonable time frame until they're ready - usually all swimmers reach this point within the first few meets
- All swimmers must be members of the Oak Valley Pool
- All families are asked to volunteer at least 3 sessions to make the season run successfully - see section under Swim Meet 101 for specifics
Practice and Meet Policies:
- Bring a positive attitude to practice and meets
- Show respect to coaches and teammates
- No horseplaying on pool deck!
- Show good sportsmanship, encourage each other, and stay in the water to congratulate other competitors after your swim
- Have FUN!!!
- Weather Policy as below
Events are chosen by coaches' discretion - there are a lot of restrictions and factors that coaches need to factor in to make the meets work, and for the team to have the best chance of success. If there are events that your swimmer is particularly concerned about or unable to swim, please let a coaching staff know.
Being asked to swim on a relay is a privilege - you're expected to swim if you are called to represent the team on a relay. As swimming is a team sport and your swimmers' availability affects others' ability to swim relays and individual events, last minute withdrawal or no shows to meets may result in your swimmer not being placed in future events or relays.
Weather Policy
- The safety of our swimmers and families is the top priority. We can and often will hold practices and meets in the rain, but we will cancel practice for risk of lightning. Communication will be sent in the event of weather related cancellations.
- If the practice is in session and weather turns bad, we will need to clear the deck per our pool policy. Please stay close or make arraignments to pickup your child in case we have to cancel.
- If you feel the weather is unsafe you may take your child(ren) home at any time - or keep them at home where they are safe!
- If a meet is cancelled due to weather, we will do everything we can to reschedule the meet at mutually convenient time. If the meet proceeds past event 42 (half way), the scores will be tallied up to the point the meet was called and there will be no rescheduling.
